Crete's Lake Georgoupoulis
A small lake with some reed bed and marshes is found to the west of this north coast tourist resort, fed by a small river
and springs, and easily reached from the main road.
Migratory birds pass by in spring and autumn, including squacco herons, little bittern, marsh harrier, nightingales, cuckoos, and many others. Sand and dune flowers are found in the area as well, and in damp areas to the east, some orchids.
Lake Kournas (left), Crete's only freshwater lake is found inland, best visited in winter, early spring and autumn.
