Northern Aegean Limnos

Limnos

A large area, mostly in the northeast peninsula of this flattish, isolated island in the far north Aegean, has been identified as significant bird habitat, though little protection has been given to most of it.

greater flamingosThe Alyki lagoon (alyki meaning saltpan in Greek) has some breeding species of waterfowl, and in winter up to 5000 greater flamingos have been recorded.

Passage periods bring waders and ducks. The island as a whole has a good number of lesser kestrel, as well as Andouin's gull and Eleonora's falcon on cliffs and nearby islets.
