St. Nicholas is the patron saint of seafarers, and in this country with so much coastline between its mainland and
numerous islands, there are many churches and chapels named for him. Nikolaos (Nikos, the familiar form) is one of the most
common male Christian names, so that on this day in every Greek town or village there are numerous boys and men celebrating
their name day.
