8 November Feast of Mikhail kai Gavril (Ton Taxiarkhon)

Feast of the Archangels (Taxiarkhis meaning Archangel) Michael and Gabriel, celebrated at churches and monasteries with the name Taxiarchis, some of the best known on Symi and Lesvos (Mytilini) islands.

6 December Feast of Aghios Nikolaos

St. Nicholas is the patron saint of seafarers, and in this country with so much coastline between its mainland and numerous islands, there are many churches and chapels named for him. Nikolaos (Nikos, the familiar form) is one of the most common male Christian names, so that on this day in every Greek town or village there are numerous boys and men celebrating their name day.
