Piraeus was known in ancient times as Kantharos and has more than one good harbor although not of equal size (Zea, micro-limano, turko-limano). Later it was known as Porte de Leon from the Lions's statue to be seen there.
In ancient times the Athenians made, at great expense, a stone corridor called the Long Walls so that they would have access to the port in times of strife. They also made another corridor to Phaliron where they also kept ships along the beach. You can see both corridors in the drawing above - click to see it larger.
