
Monastiraki Square is on the border of the Plaka Quarter and its hard to say where one ends or begins. Monastiraki Sq. is also a Metro Stop and an electric train stop. 2 different trains of differing gauge neccesitate changing trains depending on your destination.
Athinas is the hardware street of Athens and also the Central Food Market Street for fish, meat and vegetables. It also sells tourist nik-naks such as sandals, shoes, clothing, icons, soaps, loofahs, herbs, spices and more!
Aiolou Street is a step up from Athinas in product offerings and where many Greeks shop for less expensive goods and bargains than they would find on the more upscale shopping streets of Ermou or Mitropoleos which run at right angles to Aiolou. Both Ermou and Mitropoleos connect Syntagma Square with Monastiraki Square.
To the south of Athinas is the Psyrri quarter and China town and Little India. China town is roughly contained in the Sofokleous-Pireos-Koumoundourou-Evripidou rectangle with shops recognizable by their red lanterns. The warren of streets behind Koumoundourou Sq. conatains many small Chinese markets.
Omonia Square's traffic pattern has been changed around for the umpteenth time in as many years so its no longer a rotary as of May 2003. Map makers cant keep up!
Athinas Street is a major working class type of thoroughfare and home to City Hall, various City of Athens bureaus and Police stations. It contains Athens tool and hardware stores, Athens Central markets for produce, meat, fish and many other types of goods for less than anywhere else in the city. Tea, coffee, honey, herbs, spices, and lots more! Its colorful, loud, dirty, frenetic and safe!
